Third-party foil tapes and adhesives don’t bond as well to mineral wool’s fibrous surface, and you lose the fire-resistance rating that makes Rockwool worth paying for in the first place. Reflectix is a fine standalone radiant barrier product, and we stock it too, but mixing Reflectix over failed Rockwool board creates double vapor barriers and trapped moisture. That’s a mold problem waiting to happen.
Signs Your Rockwool Radiant Barrier Installation Is Failing
- Upstairs rooms won’t cool below 80°F in summer afternoons. The air conditioner is running constantly but the ceiling radiates heat downward. This usually means the foil face has been covered in dust, which kills reflectivity. Pasadena’s dry summers put a fine layer of dust on everything, and foil needs to stay clean to reflect.
- Visible sagging or fallen boards in the attic. Rockwool boards should sit firmly between rafters.
