The result: the upstairs bedrooms stopped swinging 10 degrees between afternoon and midnight, and the homeowner’s July AC runtime dropped noticeably. Spray Foam Insulation on a Cathedral Ceiling in Altadena
The problem: a vaulted living room ceiling with no real insulation cavity, so heat poured through the roof assembly every August afternoon. We sealed the recessed light housings with rated covers, then applied Icynene open-cell foam directly to the underside of the roof deck, filling the rafter bays to code depth. The result: the room held temperature like a normal flat-ceiling space for the first time since the house was built. Open-cell foam also quiets the room substantially, which the owner noticed within a day.
Crawl Space Encapsulation with Vapor Barrier in San Marino
The problem: a vented dirt crawl space that fed moisture and musty air into the whole house every time the HVAC kicked on. We removed the soggy, sagging batt insulation, sealed the foundation vents, laid a 12-mil vapor barrier across the floor and up the stem walls, and reinstalled clean Johns Manville batts in the joist bays. The result: the musty smell faded within a week, the wood floors stopped cupping, and the first-floor rooms felt warmer in winter. We see this exact situation constantly in older San Marino and South Pasadena homes with pier-and-beam foundations.
Radiant Barrier Installation Across a Pasadena Attic
The problem: an attic that hit 140 degrees in August, cooking the ductwork and forcing the AC to work twice as hard. We installed a perforated radiant barrier across the underside of the roof deck, stapled to the rafters with an air gap that reflects heat back out before it ever reaches the insulation below. The result: attic temps dropped 20 to 30 degrees on the hottest days, and the ducts stopped losing so much cool air before it reached the bedrooms. Wall Insulation for a Home with Empty Stud Cavities
The problem: a 1950s home in northeast Pasadena where the walls were built with nothing inside them, so the house leaked heat through every exterior wall. We drilled small access holes from the exterior, dense-packed GreenFiber cellulose into every stud cavity, then patched and touched up the holes to match. The result: the home held heat noticeably better within the first cold night, and street noise dropped a few decibels too. Dense-packed cellulose settles into every odd corner of an old wall cavity, which is exactly what this framing needed.
Attic Cleaning & Rodent Proofing Before New Insulation
The problem: roof rats had used the attic as a highway, leaving droppings, chewed insulation, and nesting material across the entire space. We removed all contaminated insulation, vacuumed and sanitized the attic, sealed entry points at the eaves and gable vents with exclusion mesh, and installed fresh Rockwool batts. The result: a clean, rodent-free attic with insulation that actually works, plus the peace of mind of knowing nothing is chewing on the wiring up there anymore. Rodent damage to insulation is far more common in Pasadena than most homeowners realize, especially in neighborhoods with mature trees and overhead power lines.
